Hypericum as a medicinal plant
The first mention of hypericum, or St John's wort, dates from Classical times, when four species were classified.
During the Middle Ages this plant became the subject of legends and superstitions, and it was said to be able to chase out demons and malign spirits from the body.
Renaissance physicians
prescribed hypericum oil to cure wounds,
skin diseases
and disturbances of the liver.
Today it is used as an
antidepressant
