"New Historical Information on Piero" - Sansepolcro

NEW HISTORICAL INFORMATION ON PIERO
PICTORIAL WORKS AND
DE PROSPECTIVA PINGENDI

Palazzo Collacchioni, Sansepolcro 22 april – 30 september 2007

The lovely rooms of Palazzo Collacchioni are a setting for a copy, made in the twentieth century by Elia Volpi from Città di Castello, of the fresco of Hercules by Piero della Francesca, which occupies the place where the original was for a certain period before it was shipped off to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. The opening of Palazzo Collacchioni to the public is an opportunity for the Centro Studi di Aboca Museum to display the results of all its activities related to Piero over the last three years.

The exhibition is divided into three sections:

The first section presents the facsimile of the previously unpublished manuscript De prospectiva pingendi, which is held in the Biblioteca Panizzi in Reggio Emilia, and the reproduction of Piero's most important autograph drawings. The final exhibit in this section is the facsimile of and several illustrations from the Ricciardiano 106, a codex that contains several works by Archimedes and which was studied by Piero.

The second section offers a historical and critical rereading of the paintings of Piero della Francesca in the Upper Tiber valley: these are the Resurrection, the Madonna del Parto, the Baptism, and others. Modifications made to and changes suffered by these works over the centuries are highlighted. It is also the setting for works by contemporary artists whose works have iconographical similarities to Piero's: foremost among these is the Crucifixion by Alberto Burri, a preview of the journey par excellence, which symbolises the journeys made by the many paintings and writings of Piero della Francesca that have borne the culture of this area of Italy around the world.

The third section presents the new and fascinating work by Sergio Bovenga. It is a sphere that offers a new visual perception: images inside the sphere are reflected on the internal surface with effects that allow a new perspectival analysis to be made.
